These pictures come from slides taken with a 35mm camera purchased for my
mother just prior to ending an 18 month tour in the Republic of the
Philippines. My closest friend at the time, Linda, and I rented a
chauffeur driven red Chevy Impala (at $6 per day, including the driver)
to visit Manila. We toured the Makati-Rizal area which encompassed the
new high-rise office buildings, elite shopping center, upscale suburbs,
the University of the Philippines and the cemetery dedicated to the
Filipino and American lives lost in the archipelago during World War II.
Although I didn't know it at the time, this was my last trip to Manila. A couple weeks after this trip, orders came directing me to report to Washington, D.C. IMMEDIATELY (or within 72 hours) for what was to become a 13 month investigation into why I no longer wanted to be in the intelligence gathering business. During that 13 month tour in D.C., I learned how to drive while chauffeuring high ranking members of the intelligence community around the Washington, D.C. area - mostly in a brand new Chrysler station wagon, the model with buttons instead of a gear shifting lever. |
